KNUCKLES MOUNTAIN RANGE


Knuckles Central is located in the districts of Sri Lanka, Matale and Kandy. 
Knuckles Forest covers an area of 21,000 hectares (81.06 sq mi) in the Kandy and Matale districts of the Central Province of Sri Lanka.

The high mountains are also known as the Dumbara Range as it is almost constantly covered with the fog, the western slope is also known as the Bata Dandu Kanda as it is covered with battali.

There are many large russet trees and the whole forest is covered with plants. There is intense bio and plant diversity, and also be heavy winds and fog. More than 34% of the endemic trees, shrubs and herbs of Sri Lanka are found in this range. The Knuckles Conservation Forest was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010 as part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka.
These mountains are intertwined due to the cluster nature of the Knuckles Mountain range. A mountain range can be seen from a distance look like the "Knuckles" of a bent hand and there for the name "Knuckles" is believed to have been said by foreigners. The Dumbara Range, which covers the central hills, consists of about 35 peaks, including Gombaniya, Kirigalpotta, Lakegala, Yahangala and Thunhisgala. The highest point is Gombani mountain at an altitude of 1906 m.
Knuckles is a very rich ecosystem with water resources as it is feed by southwest monsoon winds as well as northeast monsoon winds. The main water flow that start from here are Teligamu Oya, Maha Oya and Hin Gaga.

This place is an eco-friendly paradise and nature lovers can experience here many of the climatic conditions prevailing in Sri Lanka.
